How to Build a Website That Gets Found in the AI Era

Why being findable in the AI era takes more than keywords. And why every channel you own needs to speak the same language.

In a recent blog, we talked about how your brand’s online audience doubled: every piece of copy you publish is now read by humans and by the AI systems deciding whether to recommend you. This creates a stronger necessity for clear, on-brand copywriting.

But here’s the question that naturally comes next: where should this copywriting live?

The old way vs the new way

For years, websites had an easy job: rank and inform. You picked your keywords, plugged them into headers and page titles, published a blog when you remembered to, and hoped Google took notice.

That system is quickly changing. Today, more than half of Google searches end without a single click — 58.5%, according to SparkToro’s research — because the answer gets assembled in the AI overview. When AI systems build those answers, they are scouring the web for information. A 2026 study by Digital Authority Partners tracking over 1,100 URLs found that roughly 60% of the sources AI engines cite sit outside the top 20 organic results. This is good news for all of us. However, it requires a web strategy that produces clear, structured, and consistent content for optimal outcomes.

Ranking metrics only tell a small piece of the story. To have a productive website is to be understood by your audience – so thoroughly and so consistently that both a person and an AI can confidently say, “This is the brand you’re looking for.”

What does a findable website look like?

It’s still about how it looks, but a lot about what it says.

It answers real questions. The most findable brands publish content built around the questions their customers actually ask, in the exact language they ask them. This is where AI keyword-rich blogs earn their keep. When your content mirrors the question, AI systems can lift your answer cleanly and cite you as the source.

It’s structured to be extracted. Clear headings, one idea per page, and definitions stated plainly instead of buried in cleverness. AI systems pull clean, quotable answers from well-organized pages and skip past the ones that are convoluted. These systems are designed to work fast and efficiently.

It sounds like one brand, everywhere. You get the idea. And if this is a struggle for your brand, a messaging strategy is a great place to start.

Your website doesn’t work alone

It is becoming increasingly common for users to conduct multi-source brand evaluation. Meaning, they might find you on Instagram, which leads them to your website. Then, for a local business, they might go to your Google listing and check reviews and essential company information.

An AI assistant does the same thing in milliseconds, cross-referencing your site, your Google Business Profile, your social channels, and your reviews before deciding whether you’re worth pursuing.

If those sources tell slightly different stories — one tagline on the website, a different description on Google, a third voice on social — readers hesitate. The human keeps scrolling and the AI, trained to favor sources that confirm each other, leaves you out of the search answer.

It all comes back to the words

Notice what none of this requires: a bigger ad budget, a viral moment, or a website rebuild every eighteen months.

It requires a real brand strategy. The right words, said to the right people, repeated everywhere you show up. If your messaging feels clunky or disjointed, you either lose out on a customer (they “bounce”), or they never find you to begin with.

But when the foundation is right — when your positioning is clear, your language is consistent, and your website is built to answer instead of just exist — it builds momentum. Your blogs get cited, your Google listing confirms your website, and your social media serves as an extension of your website.

Start with strategy

Most brands try to fix findability backwards. They tweak the website, refresh the keywords, repost more often, and wonder why nothing moves. In order to move the needle, it starts with strategy.

At Novella Brandhouse, that’s our bread and butter: defining the corner of the market you can own, the people you’re talking to, and the exact language that makes them stop scrolling. Then we build it into everything — your website, your content, your social — so every channel tells the same story.
